Madison is a city in the U.S. state of Alabama, and it is the seat of Jefferson County. The population was 61,541 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern edge of Birmingham metropolitan area, about 20 miles (32 km) north of Birmingham and 50 miles (80 km) south of Mobile. The city was founded by James K. Polk in 1836 as part of what would become Alabama's cotton kingdom. A slave-trading center for the region, Madison became an important port on the Alabama River during Reconstruction following the American Civil War. In 1882, it became one of two cities in Alabama to be incorporated as a municipality, and its incorporation represented a turning point in its history; prior to this time, Madison had been primarily an agricultural community with only a few shops and services catering to its growing population. In 1949–50, Madison hosted Expo '49 which showcased United States' new technology products; this was also when Huntsville began developing into an major aerospace manufacturer due to advances made there during Expo '49

During World War II, firearm possession became legal again thanks to Executive Order 9981 which allowed Americans to owning guns without prior registration or approval from state governments. However, ammunition possession remained illegal until 1949 when the Gun Control Act was passed which made it legal for anyone over 18 years old to purchase Ammunition without a license from an authorized retailer
