Ammunition companies have been in Madison, Alabama for over a century. The first ammunition company in the city was W.H. Townsend & Sons which manufactured black powder and shot at the corner of High and Main Streets. In 1892, Prentice-Hall began manufacturing rifles and shotguns in town, making it one of the largest shotgun manufacturers in the United States at that time. Ammunition products were also distributed through local stores until 1978 when Winchester announced their move to Memphis, Tennessee. On July 15th, 1912, the Citizens National Rifle Association (CNRA) was founded in Madison by John Worthman with the goal of education and advocacy on behalf of Second Amendment rights throughout the state of Alabama. Today CNRA is one of America’s most active NRA chapters with chapters located throughout all 50 states as well as Puerto Rico and Guam. CNRA’s mission is “To promote personal security by defending our right to shoot quail from handguns carried into protected areas”

The name "Madison" comes from the Potawatomi word Makonnen which means "place where the water flows." The first European to sight Madison was a French trader named Jacques Marquette in 1674. He named it after Prince Francis, Duke of York and Albany, who had been sent as an envoy by France to trade with Native Americans in present day Michigan Territory. Marquette also saw potential for rice cultivation in what he called "the rich bottom country." In 1718, James Kintzmar laid out a town square on land that became known as Maple Hill. A post office called Madison was established in 1814, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1846. A schoolhouse called Madison Academy was built in 1822 and remain an important part of Madison's history; it closed in 2003 but is still preserved as a museum. In 1830, four men - Elijah Muhammad (later known as Elijah), Musa Acosta (Moses), Joseph Magee (Joeseph) and David Lane - founded what would become known as The Nation of Islam based out of Harlem, New York City. They were motivated by their belief that African Americans should own their own society rather than be ruled by white people. On December 7th 1830 they convened their first meeting at Masonic Hall on present-day MLK Blvd., near Auburn University campus
The history of ammunition dates back to the ancient Greeks. Ammunition was used in war for the first time in 476 BC when Philip II of Macedon attacked and defeated Thebes, an event that is still celebrated as a national holiday in Greece. In 1861, the US government purchased 5 million rounds of 1857 Winchester rifle ammunition from Nicholas-Jacques Conte, an importer and manufacturer of artillery shells in France. A year later, on October 25th 1862, the US bought 350,000 rounds of .50 caliber Springfield repeating rifles ammunition from Nicholas-Jacques Conte. In 1865, General John A. Logan ordered 1 million rounds of 12 gauge shotgun ammunition to be produced for use with new 3 inch howitzers being built by Empire Arsenal in Yorktown Heights, New York City. These munitions were also used for artillery purposes during the American Civil War. In 1906, Armour & Co., makers of rifled breechloading cartridges (the first such cartridges), introduced their High Velocity Norma loadings for revolvers using a new type of bullet called a "Super Low velocity" projectile. This loading allowed operation with most smaller-caliber revolver cartridges up to 9mm Parabellum (LR). After World War I Armament Corporation resumed production of high capacity military pistol bullets under license from Remington Arms Company (now Remington Outdoor) and other manufacturers under various production names including Coriolis Bullets®, Elmer's Bullet®, Barnes Bullets® and Buffalo Bore Ammunition® until 1958 when all operations were transferred to Brownells Ammo company Incorporated located in Sterling Heights Michigan USA since 1959 Brownells has been manufacturing world renown firearms products including ammo!
