Madison, Alabama is a city in north Alabama and the seat of Marshall County. The population was 27,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. The name "Madison" was given to the town during the American Civil War by General James K. Polk in order to distinguish it from nearby Mobile. The first permanent settler in what is now Madison was Isaac McCoy, who established a cabin on East Ross creek in 1817. In 1819, McCoy's son John built a log cabin on what is now White Street near where he operated his farm until his death in 1845. A few years later, David Fenton settled on land east of present day Greenmount Avenue and built a house thereon for his wife Sarah and their six children. Mr. Fenton's grandson Dallin Fenton erected an old cotton gin building on current day White Street which still stands and serves as one of downtown Madison's most visible landmarks today! In 1830, Washington Parish (now Marshall County) was organized with John Sibley as its first president; Madison became part of that parish over time through annexation or division of other counties into Marshall County (1831), Randolph County (1835), Faulkner County (1836), Montgomery County (1837), Decatur County (1841), Morgan Territory (March 4, 1861) – all within Alabama – then Confederate States of America by order issued March 1, 1865: In 1865-68 many military families moved to Jacksonport/Mobile Bayou south of Mobile & eventually founded Florence after being forced out cf Chattanooga TN following Battle Of Chickamauga

Lee to disband his army and retreat to Virginia. As a result of this decision, many Confederate soldiers were able to cross the Potomac River into Maryland and join the Union army
