After World War II, Leeds experienced a period of growth as a commercial center and developed into a major manufacturing town. Today, Leeds is an historic district that contains many historically significant buildings and sites. Leeds begins its history as an agricultural community situated on the south bank of the Flint River. The community was first settled by Welsh immigrants who arrived in 1868 from Lampeter, Wales. The original nucleus of the community consisted of 11 families who began to farm land adjacent to the riverbank. By 1870, however, most of the original settlers had migrated away and their descendants no longer lived within sight or sound of each other. In 1878, two Scotsmen named John Aitken and Alexander Stevenson came to Leeds with their families to purchase 640 acres (250 hectares) along the Flint River for $1 peracre ($0.50 per kilometer). They designated this tract as their "new home." For several years after they purchased it, Aitken and Stevenson worked tirelessly developing it into what would become one of America's leading cotton plantations. In 1886 they sold their holdings to James Fenton for $40 per acre ($2 million at today's prices). As part of his agreement with Fenton, Aitken donated land totaling 2 miles (3 kilometers) north of Leeds to build a public schoolhouse which he also served as headmaster until his death in 1907. Leeds rapidly grew starting in 1886 due to its location on fertile ground near water resources that allowed for extended cultivated fields suitable for growing cotton; furthermore, rice milling activities were located nearby so that goods could be transported easily across Alabama’s interior regions necessary for economic sustenance during these tough times preceding World War I (1914-18). During this time period there were over 100 farmers living within 15 miles (24 kilometers) radius around Leeds; moreover businesses such as grocery stores/markets/grocery stores proliferated quickly since transportation costs were not prohibitively high back then compared with modern day standards . New churches began popping up all over Yorkshire during this time period including Holy Cross Lutheran Church which opened its doors on October 9th 1860; St John’s Catholic Church built just east off Telegraph Road in 1902; First Presbyterian Church constructed on Main Street between 1911-1915; As well as several Baptist Churches established throughout rural areas adjacent to township boundaries including: First Baptist Chapel built west off Hwy 231 north side 1936-1945; Second Baptist Chapel constructed east off Highway 231 1945-1950 etc.,establishing religious affiliation amongst citizens towards specific denominations at that time Submit photo The rapid growth continue until 1893 when panics ensued caused by currency devaluation following US entry into World War I - resultant price hikes resulting in production cuts at mills around central Alabama causing mass layoffs among local farmers producing primarily cotton However despite these difficulties some people remain committed to agriculture even now through family farms still cultivating crops 365 days out year!
