In addition to its traditional businesses and services such as banking, insurance, grocery stores, health clinics and schools (Leeds High School), the town also offers a variety of recreational opportunities including swimming pools (Delta Point Pool), tennis courts (Unity Tennis Courts), golf courses (Alabama Club Course & Country Club), baseball diamonds (Red Bank Park) and cornfields/ranches (Piney Woods).

On September 15, 1955, Black Belt and Central Districts united to form the new Black Belt District School Board. The old schools in Leeds were replaced by new buildings in 1958-59. The community has experienced several natural disasters over the years: the 1927 tornado that destroyed much of the downtown area; the 1938 fire that destroyed most of the business district; and Hurricane Betsy which struck on December 6th 1979 causing extensive damage to both homes and businesses across southeastern Alabama
