Leeds, Alabama is a small town located in the Shoals District of Mobile County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,969 at the 2010 census. The name Leeds comes from the Yorkshire region of England. The first white settler in what is now Leeds was John Hargrave who arrived in 1819. He named his land "Hargrave's Land" after himself and his brother-in-law Hargrave. Hargrave built a log cabin on the banks of the river below present day Highland Park Boulevard and began to grow corn, chickens, and vegetables for local consumption. In 1823 he married Hannah Stafford and they started a family that would live in Leeds until their deaths in 1902. They were buried at Maplewood Cemetery in Mobile. Leeds was originally part of Mobile County but it was split off as its own county on December 12th, 1907. The original citizens of Leeds voted to secede from Montgomery County after feeling that they had been ignored by the government while their taxes were being raised higher than those of Montgomery County residents. The secession motion failed with only three people voting against it; one person abstained because he did not want to leave his home country without a say in how it would be run. In 1912 William A Turpin became sheriff ofMobile County and formed an all black police force known as "The White Squad". This unit helped keep order during racial riots which took place throughout most of Mobile County during that year due to frustrations over poor living conditions, discrimination by white officers, joblessness among African Americans following the end of slavery, and lack of education opportunities for many races within the county overall). This same year also saw Leeds become its own city when Mayor Jock Mahoney petitioned for city status with plans to establish a public works program and provide jobs for locals during economic times when few opportunities existed elsewhere in the state outside Birmingham or Tuscaloosa (which at that time also sought city status). Leeds, Alabama is a small town in Mobile County, Alabama. The population was 1,929 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mobile County. Leeds is located on the eastern edge of Mobile Bay and extends into Dauphin Island. It is bordered to the north by Baldwin County and to the east by Mobile County. The center of Leeds lies withinMobile Township on Dauphin Island and its limits include most of what is now downtown Leeds as well as parts of Eastwood, Holmes Beach and Southside neighborhoods in Baldwin County. The oldest settlement in present-day Leeds was founded by James Caldwell in 1819 when he moved from Tennessee with his family to establish a plantation west of where Mobile now stands. In 1823, Caldwell's brother John established a second plantation just south of present-day Leeds along with another brother, Augustus Caldwell Sr., who had settled near Gulfport four years earlier. By 1830 both families were living on an area that extended from present-day central Leeds all the way down to Gulfport proper - which would become one ofMobile's most thriving commercial districts during this time period - making them among the earliest settlers in what would become known as Mobile County. In 1837, Major General Andrew Jackson became president via renomination and brought about fundamental changes throughout much of America including images associated with Jacksonian democracy such as land grants and open elections which had significant implications for rural areas like those around MobileBay particularly since many able bodied men then labored on plantations rather than owning their own land or working off farms themselves (a trend that continued until well into the 20th century). On December 12th that year – following his inauguration –Jackson issued Order No. 11establishing "the Regular Army" composed mostly of men born outside Great Britain or Ireland who were not subject to military duty under English law but instead swore an oath pledging allegiance to "America" before local militia officers (an order which also authorized appropriations for new armories, barracks and other infrastructure projects). This measure effectively terminated British rule over much of North America while preserving some vestige thereof through military forces stationed there (it should be noted that these troops were ultimately withdrawn after only two years due largely to financial constraints). With so many soldiers moving into newly opened areas such asMobile Bay during this time period it's no wonder that several businesses quickly emerged in what would come to be called "Jacksonville". After Andrew passed away in 1861 there was an increased demand for goods exported outwards from coastal ports like New Orleans however imports continued uninterrupted until 1865 when Confederate forces destroyed US Naval vessels at Pensacola Harbor resulting in largeamine trade disruptions across Southeast AsiaMack Brown store moved inland then later replaced with First National Bank building still extant today
