The Ladd family had emigrated to Alabama from Scotland. James Ladd started a grocery store in Leeds in 1884 and would continue to run it for over eighty years until his death in 1957. In 1902, Anna married John Denton and they raised two children there before moving to Tuscaloosa in 1913. There they established a farm where they raised tomatoes and other vegetables until their deaths in 1974 and 1984 respectively. They were buried at her parents’ farmstead on the outskirts of town. In 1926, Mr. John Fitch opened the first peanut butter factory west of Birmingham with his brother-in-law Harry Ayres as manager/founder. This helped make Leeds an important player on the peanut butter production circuit during the early 20th century. However, as peanut butter production declined after World War II, Leeds began to lose its importance as a center of commerce within Etowah County due to competition from nearby Phenix City and Decaturville.. In 1978, when local ordinance prohibited discrimination against pecan farmers due to their ethnic background,[1] Leeds became the first municipality in Etowah County to establish a city government with its own police department[2]. It remains one of only two municipalities that have retained this form of government since that time.[3] Today, downtown Leeds retains much of its commercial charm dating backto the days when it housed many businesses including JB's Furniture & More (now known as First United Methodist Church), which operated from 1906-1994; The grocer George Huffman started selling groceries here beginning in 1924;[4] Aldi initially moved into what is now Walmart across Main Street from JB's between 1988-1994;[5] and Third World Supermarket closed down around 2006 but has been repurchased multiple times by present day business owners who keep it operating as Third World Supermarket USA LLC.;[6][7][8][9][10] extortion activity still occurs along 3rd Street near Aldi; however, crime rates are decreasing overall thanks largely to investment by city officials who have made various efforts such as fencing off parts of downtown which used to be plagued by theft; Leeds also has some interesting historical figures associated with it like Mrs., Patsy Baker who resided at 6 Union Avenue for most of her life before moving out towards Decaturville circa 1948 due unknown reasons after she got into an argument with her husband about how he spent his free time while she stayed home raising their three children;[11]; actor Don Ameche who lived adjacent building #3 on 5th Street for most of his life prior moving out towards Decaturville circa 1960s after marrying actress Jane Wyman there circa 1946;[12]; Sam Walton who purchased Great Western Paper Co./The News Enterprise newspaper chain here starting around 1935 before moving downstream into Wal-Mart Stores across Greenwood Avenue throughout much of Southeast Alabama beginning around 1942; author Harper Lee whose daughter Maycomb High School students attend local high school here followed by waitress named Alice Pemberton whom later worked at Café Rouge opposite Maycomb High School until 1962 when she moved away following segregationist protests targeting black people living near white schools
