The town was named for the city of Leeds, England, which had been founded by Scottish immigrants as part of a larger migration to what is now Alabama. The first settler in Leeds was John Dawson, who arrived there in 1847. Dawson's farm became the nucleus around which early development took place in the area; it later included several stores and two churches. In 1859, when Mobile County was created, Leeds became its county seat; however, it remained an agricultural community until annexation by Mobile in 1907. During World War II, major manufacturing plants were built within or near Leeds; these include Ford Motors (1941), Alcoa (1944), General Electric (1945), and Chrysler (1946). One resident who contributed significantly to postwar Birmingham's economic growth was Harry Hines Jr., whose father opened one of Birmingham's first businesses—the Hines grocery store—in 1919. After moving to Leeds from Tuskegee University where he had studied law, Hines helped found local farmers' cooperative banks and also served on various civic committees throughout his career as a mayor/councilman/member of the board of directors for numerous small towns across Birmingham Valley before becoming Mayoralty Director for Birmingham City Council at age fifty-one during same year – making him youngest ever electedMayoralties Director anywhere outside Greater London or New York City!
