Leeds, Alabama is a small town located in Baldwin County, Alabama. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is the only incorporated municipality in Baldwin County. Leeds is part of the Chattanooga, Tennessee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what would become Leeds was made by some men who prospected for gold near present day Greenville on December 4, 1827. They named their new town after George Washington's home state of Virginia and called it "Hagerstown". A post office was established in 1829, and by 1830 the township had a population of just thirteen people. In 1835 an act were passed to open up all of Baldwin County to settlers and by 1836 there were over fifty-two families living in Leeds Township. In 1840 two brothers – James Crouse and John Hance – set out from Glasgow, Scotland with $2 worth of goods and built a cabin on the banks of the Choctawhatchee River in what would later become Leeds Township. The first courthouse was built here around 1850 and initial land sales took place throughout that year as settlers arrived to claim their piece of Beckley Creek country which lay east between Fort Sumtermodern (now Chattanooga) on the Cumberland River and Sheffield on US Highway 20/TN State Route 219 south of present day Buchanan City. By 1861 more than one thousand people had settled within five miles (8 km) of downtown Leeds according to records kept by local officials Leeds growth continued unabated during Reconstruction Era when funds were available for infrastructure projects such as road building and school construction statewide including renovations to both public schools into academies during this time period . At its peak enrollment for Grades 1-8 increased from 350 students per grade school in 1870 to 1,500 students per grade school by 1930 most likely due to migration from rural areas across state lines seeking better economic opportunities following passage of federal legislation districtingAlabama like Mississippi did not experience similar waves of settlement until well into the 21st century
