The name change came about because of campaign contributions from John Denton Leeds Sr., who donated $2 for every $1 he received from others in his community. In 1902, the railroad reached Leeds and soon it became an important stop on the road system connecting Birmingham with Tuscaloosa and other southern cities. This growth led to development around the train station including a cotton gin, saw mill, bakery, grocery store and schools for children until World War II when all but one school closed due to lack of funding. Today there are still some dormant businesses in downtown Leeds which have been resurrected by entrepreneurs looking to revive this once thriving community
