The history of Jasper begins with the landing of Christopher Columbus on July 14,1492 on what is now called Cape May Island. Spanish explorers followed in his wake and discovered an inland sea which they named "Rio Grande" after one of their members, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. In 1536, Englishman Henry VIII granted a charter to a group of settlers who called themselves the Company of Discovery because they were exploring new lands that had never been touched by human beings before. The first colonists arrived in 1699 and began to grow apples for export. The early years of Jasper were very difficult as there was no water available to irrigate the orchards. However, over time various improvements have been made to make life easier for citizens and tourists alike: -In 1868, Jasper was incorporated as a village; this gave it city status but did not change many basic services such as police or fire protection; -In 1938, Interstate 65 was completed through Jasper and renamed Upson Highway; -In 1978, work began on building the Jubilee Bridge which replaced an old ferry crossing

Jasper is a small town in Morgan County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Jasper is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. Jasper has been a trade center for the surrounding rural areas since before white settlement there. The first settler in what is now Jasper was James Hargrave, who arrived in 1812 and built a log cabin on the banks of the Mobile River. In 1816, he and his family set out from New Orleans for Alabama to find land grants and settle in what would become Jasper County. They were driven back by Native Americans who killed all but one of their number as they traveled through present-day Morgan County. James' son John also settled in what would become Jasper County in 1817; he named his new land "Jasper." The first school in Jasper was erected by Baptist missionary Drury Laddham in 1827; it served as a church teaching school until 1830 when it became a primary school under the name "Abingdon Academy." It continued to be operated as an academy until 1907 when it became known as "Pioneer Female Seminary." On October 2, 1907, Pioneer Female Seminary merged with Grady Normal School to form Auburn University. The name change never happened because Grady Normal School reverted to its original name after fusion into Auburn University: Pioneer Female Seminary/Auburn University. In 1893, entrepreneurs Andrew Carnegie and Wm Blount started Phelps Dodge Corporation's gas station near present day downtown Jasper; during World War I (1914-18), Phelps Dodge donated truckloads of munitions to fight against German forces—a donation that helped finance America's entry into World War I. Today's Lambert Wallace Library complex hosts an exhibit about Phelps Dodge's history which opened on September 15th, 2014
The city of Jasper, Alabama was founded in 1819 by General James K. Polk and his troops as a military outpost on the Tallapoosa River. The town grew quickly due to its strategic location and trade with nearby Mobile Bay. In 1827, Jasper was named after the Englishman who surveyed the area for the United States government. The first post office in Jasper opened in 1829. The town experienced rapid growth during the early part of this century, thanks to its location and natural resources. By 1900, Jasper had a population of over 100 residents and was one of the most important cities in Alabama. However, during World War II, Jasper's economy slumped due to lack of war production opportunities outside of Mobile Bay. Despite this setback, Jasper has continued to grow since then and is now one of the largest citys in Alabama with a population over 300 people
