In 1901, a small community of black farmers called "New Hope" grew up around a bend on the Choctaw River near present day Meridianville. New Hope became known for its fresh water wells and its dependency on hand pumps to obtain water from the river for use by its residents and livestock. In 1907, when white farmer George Sledge bought land adjacent to New Hope and platted it as Poston Township, he renamed it Jasper because of his connections there from his childhood days spent living with his father on property adjoining Mount Zion Baptist Church which he purchased in 1899 from Major Denton Peebles (1847-1924), one of the original settlers of Mobile County. In 1910, during World War I when Mobilization began along the Gulf coast, many Germans moved into central Alabama due to food shortages caused by war rationing programs set up by Great Britain and France respectively. On November 8th of that year Judge Jens Petersen* arrived at Poston Township with twelve other German Americans seeking exemption from military service because they could not speak English fluently or read American newspapers fluently enough to understand these rules which applied both nationally and within individual states; this group became known as "The Twelve." They were eventually accepted into service but Petersen never forgot his roots or how much easier it would have been if he had just been able to go home without having any issue whatsoever - something that many Alabamians faced during those times: people like him often found themselves targeted because their background made them different than others - something that some still find today despite all legal attempts to remove such discrimination from society
