Jasper, Alabama is a small town located in the Union County region of Alabama. The population was 7,816 at the 2010 census. Jasper is home to the University of Alabama at Birmingham and two shopping malls- One located on the north edge of town and one located on the south side. The first settlers in Jasper were farmers who arrived during the early 1800s. In 1821, a post office was established in Jasper with only 8 residents. By 1830, there were over 100 residents living in Jasper. The two shopping malls were built around 1960 and 1970 respectively. Since 2000, Jasper has been known for its annual "Hog Days" festival which features hog racing, ball games, concerts and more than 2 dozen hog products from local farms throughout the weekend.

Jasper, Alabama is a town in Shelby County, Alabama, United States. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. Jasper is the county seat of Shelby County. It was founded in 1819 and named for Jasper Lewis, a United States Senator from Georgia. The first post office in Jasper was established on July 1, 1825. It served as the interchange between the Indian Removal Act Trail and the eastern route of the Payne–Williams road. The town's first store was built on Main Street in 1828. In 1830, two brothers by the name of Gentry opened a general store on Second Street within what is now known as First Baptist Church. The Gentry family operated their business until 1895 when it burned down. In 1836, John Capps organized a wagon train to journey from Mobile to Huntsville with goods needed for his cotton plantation located near present-day Decaturville in Jackson County (now Monroe County). A stop at Jasper was made on their way north before continuing northeast to Huntsville where they arrived on October 5th of that year. On November 10th of that year, Jasper was chosen as one of seven towns in Alabama to receive new courthouse square land from General James Beddoe pursuant to an act passed by Congress entitled "An Act for erecting and improving convenient public Square Streets throughout this Province". On December 1st of that same year (1836), Judge Augustus Hogg and his wife Charity donated land west of Third Street within what is now Assumption Catholic Church property to fund construction of their new home which would serve as their main residence until death or relocation could be accomplished; however only Hogg lived there long enough to see it completed! Their home sitting today remain one of downtown Jasper's most recognizable features due its unique style combining Federal architecture with Second Empire details typical for that era including elaborate porch railing and entablaturework along both sides.. The cornerstone for General James Beddoe's new courthouse building – later renamed Court House Square – were laid on January 3rd 1840 by Mayor/Judge Jno Ewing after being approved by then-Governor Zachary Taylor following recommendations from Commissioners Richard Witherspoon and Elijah Holmes...It took just over three years for construction upon occupancy beginning on April 17th of that year; finally completing five days shyof 100 years later! The original court house cost $50000 dollars which included design fees paid by Jno Ewing himself along with $10 000 contributed by charity…the total cost eventually amounted up to $27000!!! Today’s Courthouse Square contains many historic items such as courtroom furniture once used there including antique desks dating back to 1922; also partaking in its history are several caskets containing remains associated with members of early families who settled here including Judge Augustus Hogg & Charity’s son Fielding Witherspoon…Today’s Courthouse Square also contains important local & historical artifacts such as an ironclad Siege gun carriage brought over during World War II (#59) restored & display inside museum
Jasper was founded in 1824 as a small town in the Mobile area of Alabama. The town grew rapidly, and by 1830 it had attained a population of over 2,000 people. In 1836, Jasper served as the capital of Alabama during the first year of its statehood. The city continued to grow rapidly, reaching a population of over 10,000 by 1840. By 1845, Jasper had become an important financial center in southeast Alabama. The city experienced significant growth during the period from 1830 to 1860, and by 1850 it had reached peak size with a population of 20,000 people. However, because of political instability inAlabama during this time period, Jasper's growth slowed significantly and eventually petered out altogether by 1860.
