By 1890, the population hadgrown to nearly 300 people and in 1916 the town became an incorporated municipality with a population of 1,500 residents. The town quickly developed into an agricultural center due to its fertile soil and ample rainfall. Notable crops grown in Jasper during this time include cotton, tobacco, wheat, hogsheads of oilseed rape (a type of corn), potatoes, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, turnips and other vegetables. In addition to these traditional crops there were also some fruits and vegetables that were grown in the area including apples (grafted from trees imported from Europe), pears (diced for eating fresh or canned) and grapes (picked before they turned brown). During World War II the town made significant contributions to the war effort through its production of munitions such as gasoline tanks and Lewis guns. These products helped support American troops on battlefields all over North America. After the war ended Jasper experienced growth as a result of new industries developing in nearbyMobile City-based towns such as Uptown Mobileand Cross Keys-based Enterprise Technologies Incorporated-. These businesses brought jobs to Jasper while also creating new residential development throughout downtown which continues to be one of its primary attractions today.
Jasper was founded by the Trail of Tears in 1819. The town was named for General Jasper C. Hardee, who commanded the Alabama Brigade during the Indian Wars.
