After Jackson's victory in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend near present-day Mobile on September 17,1835 – one of his most famous victories – Fort Payne became an important strategic location in southeastern Alabama due to its position between Mobile Bayou and Spanish Fort Knox across Chickasaw Creek
