One of the first sights that a visitor to Jacksonville, Alabama would see is the USS Constitution Museum. The museum was built in 1906 as a warship memorial and it is one of the most famous museums in the United States. Jacksonville, Alabama is a city in the U.S. state of Alabama. The population was 82,651 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Alabama and one of the fastest-growing cities in America. Jacksonville is located on Mobile Bay and is home to Duval County and all of southeastern Baldwin County. The first Europeans to enter what is now Jacksonville were French fishermen who anchored off the coast in 1695. Spanish traders followed soon after, but no permanent settlement was established until 1819 when General James K. Polk built his headquarters at Fort Brooke on Mobile Bay for his expedition against Mexico during the Mexican–American War. A landing party led by Commodore John Fenton explored Mobile Bay in 1824 and discovered an immense tract of land lying between JACKSONVILLE AND MONROE TOWNSHIP on US 1 east of modern day Grissom Road which became known as "Fenton's Land." The area became part of Duval County on February 3, 1825 when Governor Edward Moultrie appointed Jules Thibodeau to organize its boundaries with Jackson County. In 1830 Jacksonville had a population of 705; by 1840 it had reached 2,000 people and began to grow rapidly as a result of new industry starting up around that time: cotton plantations near Pensacola (then spelled Pensacola) and Macon (now Tallahassee). In 1840 Jacksonville also became home to what is today called South Jacksonville Baptist Church – founded by Reverend Drury Maynard Jones Sr., pastor emeritus – which helped spur growth downtown into what is now downtown Jacksonville’s historic district today (). By 1860 Jacksonville had more than 12,000 residents; by 1870 it had reached 25,000 people and continued to grow until 1890 when annexation by Tallahassee made it a full-fledged city under United States jurisdiction.. In 1907 Mayor Garnet Coleman organized what would become known as "The Jaguars" football team which played its first game against Wortham High School on October 15th that year from Municipal Stadium (later renamed Joe Brown Stadium). Over time many other professional teams were added including baseball (the American Association's Jacksonville Giants), hockey (the Florida Professional Hockey League's Stroudsburg Senators), softball (the All American Girls Professional Softball Corporation's Cleveland Bluebirds), tennis (the United States Lawn Tennis Association's Stroudsburg Stars) and track & field events like the 1915 Atlanta Olympics men’s 200 meter dash where they won gold medals ();[5] while basketball played out its own little saga with several squads before eventually joining Major League Baseball as an expansion team in 1960[6] before finally folding following Hurricane Andrew in 1992[7]. In recent years there has been some revitalization going on with development around DowntownJacksonville such as renovation of KeyBank Arena into both an indoor arena/parking lot combo multipurpose facility used primarily for non-professional ice hockey games[8][9] Additionally new light rail lines are being built especially designed for downtown businesses with plans for expanding along MLK Jr Boulevard(formerly Interstate 20) from Westside Plaza all the way northward down past Live Oak Cemetery through much of Old TownJacksonville ultimately connecting back up with I-20 just south of Carrboro Street near Seminary Avenue
