Jacksonville is a city in the U.S. state of Alabama, on the Gulf Coast of Mobile Bay. It is the seat of Jefferson County and was founded in 1821 as part of the Jackson Purchase. Despite some challenges that remain—such as continuing economic decline—Jacksonville has largely managed to stay afloat despite various social ills including crime rates high enough to require police patrols night and day; a lack thereof among many African Americans living in areas adjacent to downtown; limited access to affordable housing; low voter participation rate; etc.—it is one of America’s most vibrant cities with an active community spirit that often manifests itself through art galleries, music festivals, cultural events, food festivals and more than just retail storefronts selling clothes or groceries

As Birmingham grew rapidly across central Alabama, Jacksonville declined steadily in importance until it completely vanished from existence by 1886 when railroads reached Mobile andAlabama's largest city replaced Jacksonville as the principal financial center in southeastern Alabama.
