Jacksonville is a small city in the U.S. state of Alabama, on the Tallapoosa River. It was founded on August 16, 1819 by General Andrew Jackson and his troops as Fort Moultrie, during the Seminole War. The town became Jacksonville when it was moved from Mobile to its present location in 1827 after being forced out of that city by General Andrew Jackson's forces. Jacksonville was one of the original thirteen United States cities, and the first capital of Alabama. In 1881, Jacksonville became a consolidated city with fellow Alabama cities Birmingham and Montgomery. The population of Jacksonville reached 100,000 in 1940 and peaked at over 200,000 in 1960; however since then it has declined steadily to around 60,000 today. The history of Jacksonville can be traced back to 1819 when General Andrew Jackson and his troops were dispatched to quell a Native American uprising in what is now Tallapoosa County near Mobile Bayou (now Lake Pontchartrain). As part of this effort, they established Fort Moultrie on August 16th; it would remain the primary military post for Jackson's forces until eventually moving to its current location within Jacksonville on December 15th auctioned off by Lieutenant Colonel James Kenedy for $1 million USD. At that time Fort Moultrie consisted only of two cannons and some tents; but soon enough it proved inadequate for containing the large influx of Native Americans who had come across from neighboring Florida seeking refuge from British colonial rule. On January 28th 1830 an emergency meeting was convened which resulted in authorization for construction of a new fortification - known as “Fort Donelson” - which would house eighteen cannons, three days food supplies per week and sixty-six soldiers under Major John Sowell as commandant permanente (a senior officer).
