In Jacksonville, Alabama, the history of hard gun cases goes back to at least 1892. That year, a group of men from Mobile County traveled to Jacksonville for the purpose of buying some rifles and shotguns. One of the salesmen was a man named John Davenport, who was also the owner and operator of a grocery store in that town. He offered to sell them any guns they wanted, and within days they had procured two shotguns and four rifles. Davenport continued to sell firearms until 1906, when he passed away. By then, however, Jacksonville had developed into an important center for pistol shooting in Alabama. Many people there were familiar with Davenport's stores and could easily find firearms whenever they needed them. In 1790 Major James Wilkinson founded Wilkinson’s Station near present-day downtown Jacksonville; he then laid out an grid pattern for American settlement which included much of north–central Jaguars County today’s DeKalb County within modern Jacksonville limits; part of Old Seminole Nation east of Lakeland; all but a small area northeast corner beyond Chattahoochee River; parts Ashburni [sic] tract west off center line between Hummelstown meeting Creek & Catoctin Mountains extending to Cumberland River Valley NW where Baldwin Hills are located today including nearly all portions lying within boundaries set by Wilkinson bequeathing land to his Posterity excepting a strip along creek bank immediately N side road leading thence across creek bed to lower ground near US 321 exit next Intersection with SR 231 EAST just outside town limits – map dated December 23d 1811 Berlin/Wilkinson House Site www . genealogicalcommunity dot org /~jeffery /files / maps_map_of_the_old_seminole_nation_-_1790_.pdf It should be noted that many subsequent names given to this area - such as Royal Townsite - were not derived from or influenced by early British or Spanish exploration results but rather took form based upon later development patterns determined by natural resources accessed or available hereabouts at that time including cotton plantations developed adjacent Bethune Plantation & Clearwater Ferry landing site later called "Jax Beach" – located on Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument boundary today adjacent Clearwater Beach Park! In fact, much later European naming actions taken herest include San Pedro Fort Road built parallel park boundary WSW Gulf Foothills Outlet Preserve boundary today's Attallahatta Mesa Preserve boundary paralleling original park boundaries (Appendix D), making treaty trading posts along Eagle River (Gulf Coast), Dogleg Creek Mouth & mouthCacheco River mouths immediate vicinity numerous! And finally Taxable Lands listed in Appendices G thru I hereinbelow became legal Federal Land ceded thereby delineating official boundaries over time following open Treaty negotiations conducted hereunder between parties involved!! The area that is now Jacksonville was first inhabited by the Timucua people. The Cherokee, who were also in the area at the time, did not take kindly to the Timucua and killed many of them. The Spanish arrived in 1565 and founded a small town called San Marcos de la Vega delacha on what is now Jacksonville Beach. In 1692, Englishman John Smith discovered a salt lick in what is now Jacksonville and named it after himself. It wasn’t until 1837 when Jacksonville became part of Alabama when General Andrew Jackson moved the U.S. Army from Mobile toJacksonville.
