The first European to explore the area that is now Jacksonville was an Englishman, Hugh Johnsons, in 1606. The area at that time included present-day Jacksonville and parts of Tallahassee and St. Augustine. The first permanent white settlement in what is now Jacksonville was on the East bayou of the Mobile River, near the present day city limits. In 1763, a French military expedition under Marquis de Lafayette attempted to take possession of Mobile Bay and its mouth for France. They were met by resistance from Native Americans who blockaded their ships before they could enter the bay. The exploration led to Spanish claims over Mobile Bay as well as land around Lake Jackson which became part of Tallahassee when Spain ceded Florida to Britain in 1801. In 1861, Confederate States forces invaded Union territory during the American Civil War while Fort Sumter remained loyal to the Union until it fell in April 1865. As a result of this war, much land within modern Jacksonville was lost - including much of what is now known as Old Town - making it one of America's earliest Hispanic strongholds.
