In 1802 Spanish settlers arrived from Pensacola and founded Punta Gorda on Fort Morganou Boulevard just east of present day downtown Jacksonville; this location became known as Old San Juan Hill because many ships anchored there for repairs during its early days as a Spanish naval station. In 1810 Englishman George Rogers Clark chartered USS James Madison to explore both North America and Southeast Asia; he sighted Cape HatterasIsland while sailing along East Florida coast – so much so that he thought it might be another Isla de Cuba! He radioed his findings back home to London but no one followed up! A year later he again sailed towards Florida when news arrived back at England that Commodore Perry had destroyed Manila Bay with an army consisting mainly American sailors! This event aroused great interest throughout Europe which led to Congress authorising expenditures for building boats etc., including HMS Constitution which transported Adams and Jefferson westward aboard her during their stay in America… Accordingly, Jacksonville received its first permanent European residents when Captain John Steed purchased land here from La Fayette’s widow Amelia Earhart who leased it to him under the terms “that no male or female Gadsden slave shall ever work upon any acre within my ground” In 1830 James Dickey founded Dickey’s Store on what would become Duval Street; this store became well known for its canned goods which helped contribute significantly to the growth of Jacksonville over ensuing years. In 1837 Jaxonnock Post Office was established at what now becomes corner of Court Street & Second Avenue following surveys made by Lieutenant Colonel Julius Ewing Jr., commanding officer United States Army Western District Southwest Territory Regiment during February 1840 - these surveys showed an area bounded by Court street west | Gulfstream Park east | PEMBAH Road north | St Johns River south The original town site included all current downtown areas plus portions of Inner Harbor (now Boca Raton), First Coastline Drive (now SpringHill Mall), Little Americas mall across Westshore Boulevard from I-95/I-10 exit 335B/D (now Interstate 275), today's eastern edge offshore side of Duval Street between Court Street NW and First Avenue NW, parts now ashore beyond I-565's ramps onto US 1E: court streetNW - federal courthouse NE - next largest business district SE - inland boundary lies today's Old San Juan Hill
