Additionally, some aspects of firearm manufacture such as screws and hammers that were used extensively in Confederate munitions also originated here in Jacksonville during the 1860s-70s period. The name "Jacksonville" comes from James Robertson's survey of that area in 1811–12 for King George III.[1] According to one account, local leaders decided on "Jax" as a shortened form for "the great bay or gulf nearMobile."[2] One history article says that early white settlers called this area "Creek City."[3] At first all land within what is now Jacksonville was owned by Indian chiefs or their families who leased it from them when convenient; later purchases were made through joint stock sales by citizens, who developed new land around what is now downtown Jacksonville with mills, homes, churches, schools and warehouses.[4][5] In 1830 Governor Blount issued a proclamation calling for exploration into northeasternAlabama – lands lying between present day Mobile and Anniston – which led to creation of Meridian Township,[6][7] bounded on the north by Stroudsburg Township (later known as mobile), on the west by Gainesville Township (later known as Baldwin),[8][9] on southwardly by Bartow Township (later known as Marshall),[10][11][12] on eastwardly by Calhoun County (now part ofAlabama).[13][14][15] By 1835 almost all eastern meridian township had been created except Fort Brooke,[16]: p 469 Greenwood Plantation became part of Jacksonville soon after annexation due to its strategic location bordering Pensacola Bay at mouth of River Escambia just outside present day Jacksonville proper limits
