Prior to that time all federal offices were located at Tallahassee while state offices were located at Gainesville and Vero Beach respectively; but because Tallahassee refused to recognize any changes made to its borders since secession from Alabama (and continued calling itself “Alabama”), all federal offices moved out during Reconstruction except for Post Office Department which retained its facilities downtown until 1933 when they were moved again across town (to what is now called Southside Hall).
