In 1861 Confederate forces besieged Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor while Union troops attempted to storm it; this led to military action across much of southern Alabama which lasted through 1862 and 1863 before being resolved by General Ulysses S Grant at Franklin's Mill on April 9th of that year following months of cease-fire negotiations between Confederate forces occupying Mobile Bayou Prison near New Orleans and Union reinforcements landed near Port Hudson in Mississippi Territory. The Battle of Mobile Bayou took place just outside present day downtown Jacksonville on July 8th whenUnion forces commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Pemberton attacked Confederate forces under Major General Braxton Bragg after they had surrendered their cannons captured at Fort Donelson five days earlier; despite heavy losses for both sides (the Confederates lost about 800 men killed or wounded compared to Union losses over 2200), Bragg succeeded in forcing Confederate withdrawal towards Montgomery where he discontinued hostilities against his country within three weeks).
