The first post office in Jacksonville was established in 1837 and served residents of Mobile Bay until May 1, 1840 when it opened at Wharf Street on Mobile Bayou. The first mayor of Jacksonville was John Fenton and he held that position from 1830 to 1840. On December 2, 1840, Jackson's incorporation as a town occurred with Mayor Fenton serving as its first president. A courthouse and jail were built soon after by local contractor James Ladd; both structures still stand today. In 1865–1866, Jackson experienced what is called "the Great Railroad Strike." This refers to struggles between railroad workers (mostly African American) and employers over job security, wages, working hours etc.; ultimately leading to closed mills and factories around Jackson throughout 1966-1968 due to strikes organized by labor organizations such as United Mine Workers (UMW). On October 6th 1909 local resident JB Goodwin set off an unexploded shell from World War I off Signal Hill which continues to be used for target practice by Naval gunfire units training here since WWII; this area now forms part of downtown Jacksonville proper . The present day USS Constitution Museum opened its doors on November 10th 1990 located above downtown just off US Highway 90A across from Evergreen Shopping Center
