Commander John Fenton issued orders that all remaining soldiers must march toMobile immediately for embarkation for Cuba because he feared another Indian attack similar to that which had killed Wilkinson just two weeks earlier near Pensacola Beach on October 25th The town of Jacksonville emerged as a local center due to its location at the mouth of Mobile Bayou and access to transportation including canals and roadways provided by private companies such as those built by Andrew Jackson himself while he served as president from 1829-1837
Jacksonville, Alabama was founded on December 14, 1819 by John C. Calhoun and his unfinished slave-owning plantation, East Point. The town was named for the Creek Indian word meaning "the place where the sun shines." It grew rapidly during the antebellum period as a result of its location at the intersection of two important routes: the Mobile–Birmingham Railroad and the Atlantic and Gulf Railway. Jacksonville became an important port because it lay at one end of Mobile Bay and could take in goods from both coasts. The city also prospered as a black marketeer's haven because it lacked white-owned businesses.
