Huntsville is an incorporated city in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 508 at the 2010 census. Huntsville is located on the south side of the Alabama River, about 26 miles (41 km) northwest of Montgomery and 40 miles (64 km) southwest of Birmingham. It is the county seat for Marshall County. The history of Huntsville goes back to 1817 when a group of young men from Randolph County established a trading post by the river. The town site was chosen because it offered good grazing land for sheep, cattle, horses, and deer. On July 4, 1817, a small group of settlers consisting mostly mechanics turned soldiers set out from Mobile to explore what they thought were new territory discovered by Captain James Whitehead on July 3rd while exploring Indian Territory south of Mobile Bay. They arrived at what is now known as Fort Payne which they named after their trading post near present-day Huntsville. What began as simple military exploration soon became more complex as white men encountered Native Americans for the first time and began to trade with them for goods such as food, tools, clothing and weapons. Trade brought people together who started developing what would become today's downtown district including buildings like the First Baptist Church which stands today still today despite many efforts to destroyer it over time;the Masonic Lodge built in 1834;the old courthouse built in 1886;and much more... By 1830s most residents had moved away from Fort Payne due to various difficulties such as lack of water supplies & political unrest between factions withinanism in Mobile & Jefferson Counties among others... One historian writes: "In 1830s most residents had moved away from Fort Payne due to various difficulties such as lack of water supplies & political unrest between factions withinanism in Mobile & Jefferson Counties among others". After two years attempting to find another location for his colony (due mainly to environmental issues), Captain James Whitehead abandoning his search returned home on October 12th 1830 with news that he had found another location just west ofMobile Creek not far from where he'd last seen Indians - an event later called 'Whitehead's Miracle'. This Location eventually became known Today As Oldtown or Downtown Huntsvilleville." By 1840 there were only 10 homes left standing in downtown Huntsvilleville when Confederate Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest REDEemed all citizens male or female 21 years or older living inside City Limits without surrendering Arms or Property w/o Just Cause noted below However some Citizens did manage To escape thru Wilderness region until finally surrendered At Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865 So Now We Enjoy Our Current Location Which Includes Many Famous landmarks Including Ditto Hotel And movie theater
