Hueytown is a town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. Hueytown was founded in 1892 and named for General James H. Huey, Commander of the Union Army during the American Civil War. The first post office in Hueytown was established in 1893. The community began to grow rapidly after it became an important stop on the Mobile and Gulf Railroad. In 1907, a railroad station was built and named for General William Tecumseh Sherman (1814-1865). The name changed to Hueytown in 1914 when it became known as one of the most agricultural communities in Alabama due to its large cotton plantations. In 1915, a school was built and named for Dr. Elisha Culp Banks (1835-1909), who had been instrumental in founding several schools near Mobile that same year. A Presbyterian church also opened shortly thereafter followed by a Baptist church before both become Congregational services around 1930s when those denominations merged into Jehovah's Witnesses—the first religious group to establish itself outside of Kentucky/Tennessee where they were constituents of largest Baptist denomination at that time along with Methodists and Presbyterians prior thereto). Robertson Air Force Base was activated here on July 16th 1945 as one of two AAF bases located within ten miles of Birmingham Municipal Airport which would later becomeBirmingham Space Center adjacent to BJU Tigers football stadium; administrative headquarters until transferred from Maxwell Field AFB Ala on September 15th 1959 with all other USAF bases moved there including Wright-Patterson AFB Ohio which served as operational Headquarters during Cold War era until its closure on May 5th 1992 effective date… Post Office reopened November 26th 1941 under new name Mrs Mae Slaughter’s Store No 2 after Mrs Mae Slaughter donated land across street from now defunct store fronting S Rock Road…. Hueytown is located in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama and serves as the seat of government. The town was founded in 1885 by Colonel John Huey and his brother Joseph. Hueytown is named for General Thomas Huey, who fought against the Seminoles in1863-1865. The town's first store opened in 1887. In 1907, Hueytown became an all-white citylimits after a referendum passed by the town's citizens. After integration, many black residents moved to other cities in Alabama during the 1950s and 1960s. Today, there are no active black businesses in Hueytown and most of its residents are white or Hispanic. Hueytown began as a small agricultural community near where present day downtown Tuscaloosa stands today. By 1886, Colonel John Huey had begun development of what would become modern-day Hueytown on land he owned east of centreville (now west side of University Boulevard). The original home of the Ulysses S.-"Old Joe" Tomlinson family still stands today on Fourth Street just south of Rice Avenue - one block north of where Interstate 5 now intersects with I-20A/I-10A/Interstate 65 respectively. Many early residents were farmers; however, by 1900 only six families remained within the limits established around Townsite #1: Gorman (Goudreau), Rankin (Rankin & Hargrave), Smith (Foley), White (White & Sons) and Greenleaf (Greenleaf Bros.). A new school was built southeast of Townsite #1 between 1903-1905 which soon proved too large for local students and led to enrollment growth within Townsite#2 until it too closed its doors in 1917 due to lack enrollment opportunities outside the then white mainstream society at that time! In 1885 Colonel John Huey purchased 50 acres adjoining present day Centreville from Elijah Brouwer for $525 dollars cash - making him one of the earliest developers within what would become known as Old Joe Tomlinson City Limits[5]. Development proceeded quickly thereafter with plans underway for a variety Of commercial ventures including: a grocery store/market house; two hotels; road building; lumber production; general merchandise sales tax collection office etcetera[6]. When completed only two blocks away from current day Downtown Tuscaloosa on Vine Street were dueling streets racelined with dirt shoulder width driveways leading up to single story frame buildings housing various enterprises such as grocer stores, laundry facilities etcetera[7] - much like their counterparts today across US metropolitan areas! It should be noted that these business establishments did not inceptionially occupy storefront locations but rather leased space inside more traditional brick/mortar buildings throughout Old Joe Tomlinson City Limits through proprietorship changes over time periods typically lasting anywhere from several years up until around 1940[8]; this informal system facilitated economic stability while keeping neighborhood Identities relatively unchanged through changing social patterns during post segregation eras! In 1906 Captain James Fenton replaced Captain Abel Harney as Mayor following Harney's death at age 54 years old after serving three terms consecutively since 1911...Prior to election Captains Fenton(1906-1911)and Homer Jarrell(1912-)were acting mayors concurrent with Lt Gov Atchison being impeached due to bribery allegations brought against him...The city limits reorganized circa 1912 under newly appointed Mayor Willis Cagle who served four terms starting on October 2nd 1912 thru September 30th 1916 inclusive...Most notable event during this time period may have been when water lines arrived via truckloads upon request from boosters seeking increased tourism revenues adjacent To old sugar plantation!! All progress made prior thereto was halted pending legal action taken against Atchison!! [9] When Willis Cagle took office things changed quite abruptly! He quickly established himself as someone not afraid or unwilling to take punitive action resulting in neighbors feeling threatened or intimidated - something they continue TO experience even into our current times despite occasional efforts by some individuals seeking positive change!!! Prioritizations included increasing agricultural production which eventually led to increased employment opportunities resulting mostly within industrial developments ensuing!!! This resulted eventually culminating with incorporation into Montgomery County effective February 1st 1927!!!!! [10] It should be noted that prior annexation occurred without any formal vote or process whatsoever taking place other than notices being sent out advising property owners approximately impending annexation beginning January 6th 1926!!! Residents simply responded "yes" or "no" depending upon their feelings towards possible change at that time...It should also be mentioned that there was no planning stage whatsoever preceding any annexation occurring;; it simply happened spontaneously based upon events unfolding naturally!
