Hueytown, Alabama is a small town located in Jefferson County, Alabama. The population was 1,532 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham-Tuscaloosa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Hueytown post office was established on December 10, 1892, and current mail sent to Hueytown is still delivered by hand. The first store in Hueytown opened its doors on May 4, 1893. The community was named for General James Fenton Beauregard (1813-1890), who served as Confederate general during the American Civil War. Hueytown had its start as a logging village situated along the Choctawhatchee River about four miles northeast of present day Birmingham. In 1892 Major Wm Burcham arrived with his family from Chattanooga to open a mercantile business in what became known as Beaumont Street Business Park. That same year two other men - Milton Hoenig and John Cook - also opened stores in Hueytown; both businesses closed within months because of lack of customers or competition from larger local shops. In 1903 construction began on the first courthouse in Alabama; it was completed three years later and replaced an earlier structure that had been destroyed by fire. Court proceedings were held at the old courthouse until 1911 when a new building was erected on Choctawhatchee Boulevard across from present day Hoover High School which remains one of Hueytown's most popular tourist attractions today. In 1925 A Cement Co., Inc., founded by two brothers - Lamar and Clyde Caldwell - became one of the largest producers and marketers of cements inAlabamaandthe Gulf Coast region before it ceased operationsin1978.(Caldwell died prior to that date). In 1931 Gussie Gillespie opened her own grocery store at First Avenue and Main Street which became one of downtown's most popular shopping areas for consumers during this period.(Gillespie died prior to that date).
