Hueytown, Alabama is home to the oldest optical factory in the United States. The company that operates this factory today was founded in 1892 by George A. Huey and his brother John Huey. They made a successful business importing optical products from England and Europe. In 1924, their nephew, Roy W. Huey, took over the family business and continued expanding it into new markets. Today, Optical America Inc., headquartered in Hueytown, produces a wide range of products including eyeglasses, contact lenses, sunglasses, reading glasses and medical tools. Before optically produced materials became common on American shelves in the 1920s, people had to rely on imports from other parts of the world for their vision needs. Hueytown is a town in Hale County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hale County. Hueytown was founded in 1885 by Colonel John C. Huey and his family. The first post office in Hueytown was established on November 15, 1885, and was called "Newbern." The first store in town was opened by Wm. Sells on July 9, 1886. A bridge over the Mobile River was built in 1895 to connect Hueytown with Newbern; however, it collapsed soon after and not replaced until 1916. In 1903, a public school district was created out of what had been previous individual school districts in Hale County; this district became known as the "Hale County School District". The first black teacher in Hueytown taught from 1907 to 1910. In 1935, General Motors Corporation bought a large plot of land east of town for its new plant; this site later became home to GM's present-day headquarters complex and other businesses. The original water tower still stands today (now part of an indoor recreation center) off US-280 just south of the intersection with Old US-280/Old State Highway 28 (now part of US- 280 Business). In 1951 a small dam across the Mobile River helped provide irrigation for much of central Alabama; this project also provided power for local homes and businesses through an early electrical distribution network that still remains today.* *When Hurricane Katrina struck on August 29th 2005 many parts damage including many structures within downtown palm trees were destroyed all but one business closed which is now open as chinese restaurant so you can get your seafood fix without leaving town
Hueytown was founded in 1819 by Captain Edward "Eddie" Hull. The town was named for General John C. Huey, who served in the Union army during the American Civil War. In 1865, Hueytown became a part of Mobile County and was known as "The Second City." The city reached its peak during the 1930s when it had a population of 50,000 people. However, by the late 1940s, Hueytown's population had dwindled to 10,000 people and it has since declined significantly.
