A post office called Hargraveville was established in 1828, but it was discontinued in 1835 because no mail arrived there for two years. The name "Hueytown" was first given to the community by General William Tecumseh Sherman when he visited it during his march through Alabama on November 15,1865 while leading Union troops against Confederate forces under Robert Easley at Perryville near Selma According to the 2000 census, there were 456 people living within its borders - 253 males and 251 females - with an average age of 44 years old. Of these residents, 97% were white; 3% were black or African American; 0% Native American; 1% Asian; and 2% from other races or Hispanic or Latino origin. Hueytown is a town in Bibb County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Bibb County. Hueytown was founded in 1819 by General Hernando De Soto and named for Confederate General John C. Huey. The first white settlers arrived in what is now Hueytown on October 3, 1819 when General Hernando De Soto's force invaded Alabama during the War of 1812. On October 9th, 1819, Captain James Waddell and his men of the First Regiment Alabama Volunteers were the first to set foot in what would become Hueytown. On December 6th,1819 Sergeant Major Dillard erected a log cabin on a bluff overlooking Mobile Bay for himself and his family and named it "Hueystown." In 1830 Captain Isaac Neely established a ferry service from Mobile to Pensacola carrying goods delivered by boat from Spanish Fort down Mobile Bay to Pensacola aboard Mississippi Riverboats operated by Neely & Co.. In 1840 Captain John Paulding established an inn near present day Decatur Street which became known as "Paulding's Landing". In 1852 Lieutenant Colonel Fenton Moore began purchasing land at present day SE corner of 4th Avenue and Jefferson Streets where he built Judge Royce's Hotel (now known as Cadillac Place) which still stands today as one of downtown Hueytowns most popular tourist attractions. LtCol Moore also started building homes along SE corner 4th Avenue and Jefferson Streets which are now called "Moore Park" . He also started gristmill Thunderbolt that still stands today producing flour for local restaurants across town including The Depot Restaurant located on current day 4th Avenue South between Vine Street West and US-431/4 south east of Interstate 20

In the late 1980s, there were plans to revive the cotton industry in Hueytown and nearby areas by developing new mills and using local land for agriculture purposes. However, these plans failed to gain momentum due to competition from other countries with similar acreage for agricultural production.
