During World War II, many local businesses were involved in producing munitions for the war effort including Cement Works No. 2 (now known as Walnut Hill), Machine Shop No. 1 (now known as Hicks Machine Shop), Cottonseed Oil Company No. 3 (now known as Gulf Petrochemical), and Rubber Works No. 4 (now known as United States Rubber).
