The town was founded by General James L. Folsom and his wife Esther in 1872 as a two-day stop on their way to Huntsville, Alabama. It grew rapidly due to its natural resources and commerce: logging, farming, and manufacturing became important industries in the early years of the town's development. In 1916, Hueytown amalgamated with neighboring Mobile to form one municipality. In recent years, Hueytown has seen some redevelopment and growth: it has been renamed Sunnyvale after being purchased by Google in 2007; a new elementary school was built in 2009; and an arts center was opened in 2011. Hueytown is a town in Bibb County, Alabama, United States. The population was 3,358 at the 2010 census. Hueytown is named after General William Tecumseh Sherman and his wife Louise Temple Johnston. The first European settlers in what is now Bibb County were Frenchmen who came to Mobile Bay in 1795 looking for new land to settle. They named their settlement "Houetown" after Jean-Baptiste Houet, one of their number. A group of English colonists arrived at Cahokia on the Etowah River in 1805 and called their community "Houetown." In 1811, General Hurtado de la Hoz discovered oil reserves near present-day Hueytown and decided to develop them. He founded the Oil Fields Company and donated all of the lands surrounding present-day Hueytown to that company. The town name was derived from its founder's name and it became known as "Hueystown" until about 1850 when it reverted back to its original name of "Houetown." In 1830, most of what is now Bibb County was organized as Sumter county due to the efforts of Senator John Crain who wanted a more centralized government for the area. When Sumter county split into Quitman and Cullman counties, Houetown remained part of Quitman until 1864 when it became part of Cullman county once again because much of the southcentral area had been acquired by Pulaski counties during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). After Reconstruction ended in 1865, many white people moved out of southern Alabama into newly formed states such as Georgia or Texas while black people remained behind inAlabama. Most residents in Houetown returned to life within a few years after this period passed. In 1898, general James Longstreet helped lead Confederate forces against Ulysses S Grant during Operation Allotment which resulted in Union victory over Confederate forces 418 miles away at Appomattox Court House thereby ending slavery throughout mostofthe Southern United States includingAlabama becoming an open state following that event rather than being closed off like it had been since Reconstruction began several decades earlier
Hueytown was founded in 1884 by J.C. Huey and his family. The town on the Choctawhatchee River was named after General Andrew Jackson, who had died in 1837. In 1907, the town became a city and is now known as Birmingham, Alabama.
