Hueytown is a small town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,823 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County and home to Hueytown High School. Hueytown is located on the Cahaba River. The town was first established in 1814 as a post office called "Huntsville." The name changed to "Hueytown" after General David Hume Huey, a Confederate general and governor of Alabama during the American Civil War. In 1868, Hueytown became part of Marshall County when it was created from parts of Mobile and Baldwin counties. The history of Hueytown begins with white settlers who began arriving in what is now Marshall County in the 1830s. By 1840, there were about thirty-six settlers living in what is now Hueytown. Of these people, eleven were Methodists, six were Baptists (later Methodist Episcopal), two were Presbyterians, and one was an Independent Baptist. In 1855, three men from Huntsville organized a company to purchase land for a new post office near present-day cities such as Birmingham and Tuscaloosa; their goal was to provide transportation between those cities and their plantations onthe Coosa River north of Mobile Bayou. The Post Office Department approved their application but refused to recognize them because they did not have capital stock or an elected board of directors like other businesses had done at that time. They decided instead to open their own store under the name "Huntsville & Meridian". The first post office opened on October 3, 1856; it served primarily residents of Huntsville and Meridian until November 1861 when it became part of Marshall County due to its close proximity to Montgomery County's capital city Montgomery (then known as City Point). Marshall County wasn't formed until March 4th 1865 when all of Baldwin county went into Union hands following the Battle of Five Forks over control of Mobile Bayou between Confederate forces led by General Robert E. Lee and Union forces commanded by Ulysses S Grant; this left Marshall County with only Mobile (formerly Spanish Fort) remaining within its borders.. On May 15th 1865 local citizens met at courthouse square in downtown Hueytown to organize themselves into a school district which would serve all islands within Marshalls Countyshoulder Than any other school district in Alabama! At this time schools such as Hardin Academy had been open for only five years or so! This event marked one step towards formalizing education hereabouts! On July 2nd 1865 school districts throughout Alabama united under one banner resulting in hard times financing new classrooms much needed after prior years decrease in enrollment! After many appeals through newspapers letters patent granted on December 12th 1865 creatingHardins AcademySchool District #1 making him superintendent
