Hueytown is a town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Huntsville–Decatur, AL Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hueytown is located on US-Route 7 south of Decatur and east of Huntsville. The first settlers in what is now Hueytown were farmers who established their homes on a small parcel of land they leased from the Creek Nation. They built log cabins and named their settlement after General James Hance (1795-1881), an American general during the Seminole Wars who fought for the United States against Spain. The first black residents of Hueytown were Loretta Lynn Hutchins and her husband Vernon Lynn Hutchins (1914-2001). They moved to Hueytown from Jackson, Mississippi in 1978 after Vernon's ancestors had been living there for over three centuries. The Hutchinses are not only hometown heroes but also local icons because they spearheaded one of the most significant civil rights campaigns in Alabama history – challenging racial segregation in businesses and housing throughout their home state. In 1957, construction began on what would becomeAlabama State Capitol Square – then known as Capitol Hill – within downtown Hueytown limits. It was later renamed Statehouse Square following passage of legislation authorizing its establishment by then-Governor Donnell Peebles III. In 2006, Governor Bob Riley announced that he would seek to rename Statehouse Square again to honor Generals John F Kennedy and Robert E Lee – Americans whose graves can be found nearby at Arlington National Cemetery – thus completing his commitment to rename all state capitals nationwide upon taking office in 2007 when he became America's 44th president.
