Hueytown is a small town in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,847 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Tuscaloosa County. Hueytown was named after Confederate General andGovernor John C. Huey and his wife Julia Buford Woodruff. The first post office in Hueytown was established on July 16, 1836, by Isaac Hale with the name of "Poindexter". On October 4, 1839, it changed its name to "Hueytown" after Confederate General andGovernor John C. Huey and his wife Julia Buford Woodruff. The first store in Hueystown was called The Smith Store and opened on November 11th of that year by Hiram Sibley under the name "The Smith & Wesson Emporium." A post office having been established at present-day Hueytown on March 5th, 1873 under the name of "Tuscaloosa", remained in operation until it was discontinued on June 12th of that year by order of Postmaster General Amos Kendall because many letters were received from rural parts which had no postal service at all. On February 17th, 1907 a fire destroyed most of the businesses in downtown Tuscaloosa as a result of an arson attempt by two students at Tuskegee Institute who had become frustrated with their lack of success in getting money for tuition purposes from their classmates there. This event is considered to have been the beginning of downtown's decline which continued until 1978 when new buildings were erected along Commerce Street which revived much interest in downtown again. Today's shopping center located east off I-5 near where Highway 231 intersects Interstate 35 provides greater access to both local retailers as well as national chains such as Macy's and JCPenney while preserving much older architecture dating back to early TuscaloosaMunicipal Administration Building (now used as administrative offices for University Of Alabama) built c 1830 stands witness to one aspect - even today many residents feel close knitness among friends due largely to tight community support services coordinated through volunteer groups like Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MAPD). A major road improvement project proposed for 2006 includes widening I-5 between exits 204A/B (exit 7 south) westward from US 71 North towards Auburn University but has yet to move forward due to opposition from some business owners including several who own adjacent properties adjoining I-5 within city limits rendered difficult or impossible by this widening project without prior agreements or consent from neighboring landowners whose property would be impacted thereby limiting development potential; also resisting any encroachment into agricultural land currently used for livestock grazing operations providing employment opportunities for locals during off peak seasons

Hueytown was founded in 1892 by General William Tecumseh Sherman and his wife, Jennie Cleveland Sherman. The first post office in Hueytown opened on December 1, 1892. In 1924, Hueytown became an incorporated town with a mayor and five trustees. On January 1, 1929, following the amendments to the US Constitution providing for direct election of mayors in cities with over fifty thousand residents, Hueytown passed an ordinance creating mayoral government with a mayor and four councilors instead of five trustees. With the repeal of Prohibition in 1933 and the depression that followed, business activity declined in Hueytown and by 1945 it had only 2 retail businesses open for business out of a population of 725 people
Hueytown is a small city located in Cobb County, Alabama. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Hueytown was founded in 1853 by Colonel James D. White and his family.
