A school was organized in what is now the cemetery in 1899; it served as the only school until 1917 when a new elementary school was built adjacent to the old one. The community consolidated with neighboring Decatur on January 1st of 1907 under the name "Hueytown". At that time it had a population of 2,814 people living in 922 households The population peaked at 3,934 during World War II when many local farmers took up arms against Japanese forces invading their homes

After the war ended, many residents left Hueytown for more centrally located areas such as Birmingham or Tuscaloosa County. However, some residents remained in the community until their deaths or moved away after changes in leadership at Randolph County government caused them to leave again.
Hueytown, Alabama was founded in 1832 by General John C. Marshall. The town was named for General Robert E. Huey, the first Governor of Alabama.
