Homewood is a city in Bibb County, Alabama, United States. The population was 15,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Bibb County. The name "Homewood" is derived from the word "honey" and "wood", both of which are found nearby. The first settler in Homewood was John Witherspoon, who arrived around 1820. Witherspoon named his new settlement 'Honey Grove'. By 1830, sugarcane had started to be grown in this area and honey demand increased so much that a new post office called Honey Grove was built on State Road 527 east of Homewood in 1831. In 1833 an act of Congress designated the town site as part of Mobile County and it became its capital in 1837. The county seat remained at Honey Grove until 1917 when Mobile shifted to Montgomery because of World War I needs there. During Reconstruction (1865-1868), Homewood became one of the most important African American communities in Alabama due to its proximity to white society and opportunities for education and work. Many black people were moved into rural areas during this time period as efforts were made by state officials to end segregation in Alabama restaurants, public transportation, schools, etc. However, many residents left after poor conditions or joblessness emerged following Reconstruction ENDED discrimination throughout much of America's south during the late 19th century; thus leaving those living near large white cities such as Birmingham without similar opportunities for advancement or access to education or social services available their brethren up North. In 1907 a group of businessmen bought 1/2 mile (1 km) north from downtown Houston Mills into what would become known as Park Heights Estates; they named their subdivision 'Homewood'. When business declined during World War II with only 8 homes being produced per acre (3 hectares), they decided to close all production but maintain some homes for sale on their property until enough buyers could be found; however noone came through so they reverted back to production status within 2 years again leasing out remaining units until 2003 when they sold all their land off once more becoming an apartment complex designed by Philip Johnson with satellite dishes protruding out from every unit like antennas on top

In 1919, an electric streetcar line called the "Saddle Horse" service began operation between Birmingham andHomewood and became popular among residents of both communities. By 1930, there were over thirty businesses in HomEWOOD with a population of around two hundred people The economy of HomEWOOD changed dramatically during World War II due to increased demand for housing in Birmingham while also providing jobs for local citizens who could not find work elsewhere because of wartime rationing. During World War II, many aluminum plants were located within spitting distance of HomEWOOD as production soared due to wartime shortages caused by Germany's invasion and occupation of France and Belgium
