Homewood is a small town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville–Decatur metropolitan area. The first settlers to Homewood were farmers who arrived in 1814 from Tennessee and Georgia. A post office was established in 1836, and by 1840 the community had a school and two stores. In 1847, a mill was built on the White River, which soon became an important source of local flour for local breadmakers and other businesses. The mill became active into the 20th century; during World War II it produced munitions for the US military. In 1938, Homewood incorporated as a municipality. In 2009-2010[1], Homewood submitted an application to become one of five cities within the new Huntsville–Decatur Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). This MSA includes most of Marshall County excepting parts of Decatur and Athens counties.[2] The application was approved on November 5, 2010,[3] making Homewood one of six cities in that area.[4] As part of its incorporation process into the MSA, Homewood agreed to establish a city government with seven Councillors instead of current four Councillors per City Council Districts as allowed by state law.[5] As well as agreeing to make all necessary changes to its ordinances and regulations to join with other municipalities within the MSA,[6] Mayor Jerry Ford also announced that he would be retiring after serving out his full term in office through 2015; this will leave four seats vacant on councilmember bodies which will now need to be filled by special elections set for February 3rd through March 3rd 2020[7].

Homewood was founded in 1871 by John and Sarah Stephenson. The Stephenson family had a farmstead on the northeast corner of Third Street and Union Avenue, which they donated to Homewood.
