A few months later, on May 2nd1836, Aitken married Sarah Jane Cobb at Log Cabin Church in present-day Cullman County . Since there were only three other families living within five miles of where they were going to live (and all but one died before getting there), this event helped solidify the community’s foundation as well as start Immigration from Great Britain which would continue until World War II

Homewood is a small town in Alabama, located about 20 miles east of Birmingham. The population was 3,521 at the 2010 census. Homewood is the county seat of Lowndes County and has a total area of just under square miles. It lies southwest of Birmingham on Interstate 65, between Hoover and Stone Mountain. The first settlement in what is now Homewood was made by African Americans in 1868 when they were allowed to settle near what is now State Road 21. The town name first came into use in 1880 when it was annexed by Lowndes County from Tuscaloosa County. In 1902, Hometowns Dairy became the first grocery store in Homewood when it opened on Bellefonte Street. In 1955, the original white schoolhouse burned down and was replaced by a new one which still stands today. That year also saw the opening of First Baptist Church which remains an important part of the town's history today. In 1998, Mayor Don Carlisle dedicated Homewood's newest library which is located on Old Main Street inside First Baptist Church.
Homewood was a slave town in the Alabama Territory, located in what is now Madison County. It was founded by freedmen of English descent in 1819, and was part of the Mobile District until it seceded from Union rule in 1861. The town had a population of about 1,500 during its peak years in the 1840s, but it declined thereafter.
