One woman died as a result of this attack . Homewood was a small town in Alabama during the late 1800s. The town was founded in 1837 by white Americans who relocated from Mobile, Alabama. The town grew quickly and soon had a population of around 100 people. In 1853, Homewood became the first incorporated municipality in Baldwin County. In 1865, Homewood became part of Mobile County. The town experienced some major changes during the early 1900s. In 1907, the local post office moved to downtown Homewood from its original location on State Street. Additionally, in 1912, the local school district merged with the Baldwin County School District and renamed itself Homewood-Baldwin County Schools. During World War I, Homewood served as an airfield for American military aircraft used by General John J. Pershing's forces campaign in Mexico City). After the war ended, most of the airfields were converted into housing estates or developed into other uses such as farms and businesses. The community continued to grow through the 1940s and 50s; however, it reached its peak during the 1960s when it had a population of over 1,000 people.
