Shooting protection history in Helena, Alabama began with the first pistol shootings in 1881. One of the first pistols to be manufactured in Helena was the Colt Model 1873. The revolver was designed by Daniel Boone and featured a six round magazine, hammerlock grip safety, and a 6” barrel. It was used as a service Pistol by law enforcement officers and hunters until around 1915 when it became increasingly difficult to find cartridges that would fire reliably in these pistols. With no available cartridges that fired securely through 6” barrels, many law enforcement agencies transitioned to using revolvers chambered for .38 Special or 9mm Parabellum rounds. In 1911, the National Rifle Association (NRA) organized an annual meeting in Helena which gave rise to the idea of creating a shooting range within the city limits. The NRA formed a committee which submitted a request for proposals for building a shooting range which were accepted by City Councilmember J.O. McGeehoefer on February 15th, 1912. The NRA donated $5,000 towards construction of the range while Mayor Harry Hugginsdon contributed 20% of all receipts from gun sales at local gun stores during 1913-1914 to help finance the project cost. The shooting ranges opened for business on July 1st 1914 with about 125 shooters from across Alabama attending test shoots before opening to the public on October 25th of that year. As time passed and cartridge availability changed, so did shootout techniques being employed at local shootouts throughout Helena and Alabama including “Wallace & Gaston” where two opponents stood shoulder-to-shoulder facing downrange holding rifles with only 12 rounds each remaining after one man had expended all his rounds trying to edge his opponent out of position; “Hoovervsaurus Rex” where participants would line up foursquare against an imaginary wall using only their handguns as targets; “The Great Western Shootout” where competitors engaged each other in close quarters using shotguns instead of rifles; and most notably “The Apache Shootout” which took place outdoors over open mud pits filled with enough sandbags (approximately 10 feet deep) that gunmen could not get close enough without becoming bogged down resulting in high casualties for both sides

This cooperative effort led to economic success for both locals and visitors alike over the years. In 1924, when Mobile became an independent city, some residents decided it was time for their small town to join forces with nearby Mobile to create one powerful local entity that would promote commerce and culture within the region. This merger was called the "Helena Compact." Today, tourism continues to be a major factor in Downtown Helena's economy as well as its social fabric; through events such as art shows and music festivals throughout the year people can enjoy cultural experiences that are unique to this small city on Alabama's gulf coast .
