It is the largest municipality in Montgomery County and the county seat of Montgomery County. Helena was founded by white settlers in 1871 and named for English woman Helena Blakeney. In 1949, after white flight began to occur throughout much of the Deep South following World War II, Helena became integrated with Montgomery as a black city under state law passed that year by then-Governor George Wallace; all black municipalities were created within one year of this law becoming effective statewide. From 1955 until 1957, it also served as the capital of what would become known as "The Black Belt" region around Birmingham and Tuscaloosa; this area included parts of present-day Selma and Decatur counties north of Montgomery Boulevard outside downtown Birmingham. In recent years, Helena has experienced significant growth due to its location adjacent to Interstate 24/40 (the main artery through which many people travel into central Alabama) and its proximity to both Greater Birmingham (to the south) and Auburn University (to the north).
