Helena is a town in Choctaw County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile-Biloxi-Pensacola metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Helena was John C. Baylor, who came to Helena in 1819 from Tennessee and built a cabin on the side of a mountain. He later sold his land and moved to Huntsville. The first post office in Helena was established in 1825, and the town took its name from General James Eanes, who served as colonel of cavalry during the Mexican-American War. A schoolhouse and Courthouse were built between 1830 and 1836 by Rev. Newcomb Stephenson; they were replaced by churches in 1846 (the original building still stands). The first storehouse was built around 1840 by Wm Henson, who operated it until 1850 when he donated it to the town for use as a public library; it has been used as a church since then. In 1865, Confederate Major General Pte George Armstrong decided to move his headquarters from Montgomery to Helena after learning that Union forces were planning an attack on Mobile Bay; he ordered all military stores brought into town so that they could be stored without being pillaged by Union troops under cover of darkness. On October 10th 1865, while General Armstrong was visiting his forces at the local millrace near Helena's downtown square, Union soldiers stormed the Millrace house resulting in four killed including Armstrong himself before he escape across the bay Bridge into exile. After Reconstruction ended following Southern secession had occurred two years prior at Appomattox Court House south of Petersburg), many white residents fled eastward towards Arkansas or northward towards Clevelandton or Tuskegee where jobs opened up for them after Reconstruction ended with African Americans now classified as citizens rather than slaves like they had been before 1861 when slavery began statewide in Alabama
