It was renamed Helena after General David Hunter Helmsworth, who led America’s forces during World War I. In 1925, Helena became the seat of Jefferson County when it was created from parts of Clarke and Cullman counties. The county went through several name changes before becoming Helena finally in 1957. By 1900, Helena had a population of just over 100 people. However, its growth came slowly due to the area being remote and difficult to access by wagon or horseback. The first settlement in what would become Helena occurred around 1800 when two men named Grimes set up camp on their farm about four miles northeast of present-day Helena. The first white person to live in what would become Helena was James McGill who arrived in 1807 with his family from Scotland. He built a cabin on his land which he named McGillvillette (later known as McGill). Other early settlers included John Claxon, Daniel McLaughlin and Alexander McGillivray (a brother of James McGill). It wasn’t until 1814 that General David Hunter Helmsworth arrived at Fort Donelson on behalf of America during the American Civil War. Heading up America’s forces were General “Old Hickory” Jackson and Major-General William Tullahoma – both natives of Chattanooga, Tennessee. When Lieutenant Colonel Samuel Sturgis tried to enter Clarksville for supplies after leading an attack against Confederate troops near that city on July 2nd,1814 – only 10 miles from where modern day Helena stands – he met with resistance from local militia led by Captain Nathan Bedford Forrest.* After successfully skirmishing with Confederate forces for several hours lieutenant colonel Sturgis retreated back across the river towards Clarksville under heavy gunfire from Forrest’s men* In reaction to this victory Helmsworth ordered all available US Volunteers including mounted riflemen and artillerymen to cross over into Kentucky immediately* This action set off a series of battles called “The Battle Of Lebanon Hill” which took place less than three weeks later(* HELMSWORTH: “Some Account Of Our Campaign That Began On July 2d A[d] ended On October 14th Near Clarksville With A catastrophic Result For Our Enemies… commandeered Property From Many Citizens Who Fought On Our Side And Were Slaughtered As They CAME BACK TO THEIR HOMES….. We Lost Twenty seven souls Out Of A Total force Of Fifty Three Hundred Five Persons commanded By Lieutenants Colston And Sturgis) . . . within days reports reached Nashville that General Houston had surrendered at Appomattox Court House* At this point much confusion ensued because most thought Chief justice Marshall had died along with Houston* After some debate one decision was made to send word back home to Mrs Houston that her husband was safe but no information ever got back* Helmsworth then continued his march westward meeting few obstacles along the way such as Indians roaming free across open country*) Upon reaching Louisville he announced his military situation to local residents before departing for home (* LEE: After leaving Fort Donelson Helmstorff halted near Lexington due To Strong winds Which Would Have been very dangerous To Travel Anywhere With So Many Men*) In 1825 Genl David Hunter Helmsworth moved permanently from Shelbyville Ala., eastward Along route taken by Handy Andy Odom into Colbert Co., now Robertson Co., Ky., until reaching JEFFERSON COALITION line Feb 4th 1830 & thence moving southwesterly 7 Miles until reached ROGERS COAST May 12th 1830…. general stopped at Camden & started out w/ 1000 Horseies 6 mules 1 Dog team 3 carts Wagon teams drove Horses Overland From here they were driven All Day long Pouring down rain Helena began its history as a small town located about four miles northeast of present day Helen Mills Road*. It changed its name once again soon after becoming part of Jefferson County when it became part of western Alabama in 1925††††.* These changes didn't happen overnight however; many pioneers hadTo leave their homes due too difficult terrain or distances making getting there impossible for either wagon or horseback transportation*. Despite these difficulties some brave souls did manage make it through** [* See map below] As time passed more businesses joined hands together forming communes(* HELENA COMMUNITY GROUP PHOTO circa 1907) like those mentioned earlier: James McGillvillette (laterMcGillivray), Daniel McLaughlin*, Alexander McGillivray (*See photo above), John Claxon*, Christopher Giles (*See photo below), Job Thomas (*See photo below), Wm Grier*, Nathaniel McGee(*See photo below)* [* Some members still living today are Christopher Giles (87 years old), Job Thomas (75 years old), Nathaniel McGee (69 years old) ]. This cooperation helped grow commerce within the community * [ ELLIS: One reason our community flourished so well despite challenges throughout our history], helping support social activities like dances etc *. Meanwhile outside life went on…….. [the citizens] watched TV shows like Perry Mason®, Days Of Our Lives®, Murder She Wrote® etc while eating hamburgers at Subway restaurants**** ******* [] Eventually though things caught up with them; Main Street ran dry during prohibition Era due mostlyto lackof water resources not being able to handle increased demand caused by increasing production associated with oil wells(*see "History" tab above *) . As per federal law alcohol must be sold between 9pm-6am rather than 9pm-3am which limited business opportunities especially since many residents worked late nights ** [* See sidebar "Helena's Strange Beginnings" for more information]. Finally via state legislation allowed supermarkets starting open at 7am instead OF 9pm&&&&***** {* Note - current location is currently unknown} *)
