In the early 1800s, Helena was a small town in central Alabama. It was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants and their descendants in the late 18th century. The area now known as Helena was laid out as a town on January 5, 1827, when Judge James Gadsden land grant was made to James C. Atkins. The town of Helena grew rapidly due to its location and became an important center for trade and commerce in central Alabama. By 1840, the population of Helena had reached 1,500 people. However, by 1860, Helena had fallen victim to economic decline and social unrest that followed the American Civil War. In 1865, Helena became part of the newly formed Union Territory of Arkansas following the war’s end. However, local residents continued to resist Union rule and fought against Confederate troops until 1870 when they finally surrendered unconditionally. In 1871, Helena become part of the newly formed Confederate States of America following secession from the United States. After the war ended, cotton farming resumed in what is now Helena but also produced crops such as potatoes and corn for local markets. The post-war period saw arowth in gun culture in Helena due to its strategic location at one of several crossroads betweenAlabamaand Tennesseethat facilitated trade routes during Reconstruction era
Helena, Alabama is a small town in the southcentral United States. It is located on the Mobile River, just east of Mobile and west of Montgomery. The population was 3,481 at the 2010 census. Helena is part of the Baldwin County, Alabama Metropolitan Statistical Area. The settlement began as a Methodist church in 1827 and soon became known for its cotton gin, foundry, and flour milling industry. Helena produced goods that were sold throughout the Southeast and beyond until the early 20th century when primary production shifted to other products such as automobiles and aluminum production. In 1960 Helena became an incorporated city after voters passed a referendum making it one of only two cities in Alabama with this status. Today, Helena retains its rural character with several farms visible from downtown areas; however, major industries have moved away including manufacturing but also agriculture which produces hay, cottonseed oil, fruits (figs/apples/grapes), potatoes (a mainstay in local cuisine), chicken eggs, and some dairy products such as cheese. A number of businesses relocating to Helena include restaurants like Ruby Tuesday's Restaurant & Brewery which opened in 2007; JT's BBQ - open since 2006 - which specializes in smoked pork ribs; Haynes Drugs - opened in 2009 - where customers can find pharmacy items such as cold medication and pain reliever prescriptions; Monrovia Mills - active since 1936 - now operates as a grocery store; C&D Tire & Body Sales has been operating here since 1957.

Helena, Alabama is a town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. Helena is named after Helena Pugh, who donated land to the town in 1881. The first post office was established in Helena on November 12, 1881. The first settler in Helena was James Hance and his family who arrived from Tennessee in 1826. Hance became a successful merchant and political figure in Shelby County before moving to Marshall County and starting a grocery store called "The Gables." He also served as sheriff of Marshall County from 1851-1853. In 1882, he donated land to the town for municipal purposes and its name changed to "Helena." The community had two churches by 1888: one Congregational (now First Baptist) and one Methodist (now First Methodist Episcopal). A railroad reached Helena by 1889 and it soon became an important center for cotton production due to its location at the intersection of several railways. In 1916, Helene's black residents founded their own local NAACP chapter which still operates today under that name. In 1984, Helena was made into a city by then-mayor Don Blankenship with support from then- mayor George Wallace; however, it never gained formal city status until 1996 when it annexed nearby Cullman Heights
The Helena, Alabama school system was founded in 1892. The first schools were in the center of town, and later additional schools were built around the periphery. Helena is one of the most well-known small communities in Alabama because it has been a center of education for more than 100 years.
