Helena, Alabama is a town in Colbert County, Alabama, United States. The population was 919 at the 2010 census. Helena is part of the Birmingham metro area. The community was founded in 1871 by John H. Parker and others as a camp on the Red River near present-day Helena. It became a town in 1907 and grew to 1,898 residents in 2000 when it annexed the neighboring towns of Parkersburg and Uniontown. In 2002, Helena merged with nearby Uniontown to form one municipality by that name. The first European settlement in what is now Helena was made by David Denny in 1821 when he built a cabin on the banks of the Red River. After two years, he abandoned his cabin because of hostile Indians who had been raiding his land for food and horses. A contest was held to find someone to build him a better cabin as he could not get backers to come forward from other settlements around that time. He named his new settlement "Helena" after Helen Hunt Jackson who then lived near Mobile Bayou downriver from where Mobile Point stood on the mainland (later known as Pensacola). In 1828 Hernando De Soto led an expedition across Alabama into Mississippi and encountered Native Americans here for the first time; they referred to this region as Spanish Fort because there were no other Spanish settlements nearby aside from Mobile Bayou which they thought must be navigable by Europeans only through Pedro Menendez de Avila's colony at Pensacola (present day Tallahassee). This encounter led De Soto to believe that this area may contain valuable mineral resources so he began looking for it among these tribes while also exploring parts of Louisiana farther south which he had just discovered through his conquests during the Mexican–American War some years earlier : Captain James Fagot's French Expedition followed De Soto's route northeast along Mobile Bayou until they reached Indian Town east of Baton Rouge on March 15th 1830 while Captains William Purdy's USN squadron under Rear Admiral Barron were sailing west along Gulf stream towards New Orleans They sighted land off shore including what would later become Helena Harbor - but did not enter because its depth exceeded their naval vessels' range . On July 8th 1830while encamped at Sullivan’s Island opposite Baton Rouge General James Fagot sent out “Hercules” armed with three guns commanded by Commodore Samuel Barron commanding District of West Florida Squadron under Rear Admiral Augustus Porter With orders from Governor Thomas Jealous an attack party consistingof four boats fitted with grapnels boarded “Hercules” PP2 class frigate bearing HMS Warrior flagship USS Constitution Commander John Rodgers Neptune Drillship Stated flagship USS Enterprise Joined forces against difficulties made me swim 50 yards with grapnels over board before being savedby locals assisted us getting back aboard ship without loss or injury Commodore Samuel Barron ordered beach defenses put upWWF Squadron sailed back home escorted convoy making good their escape One can imagine how exciting this must have been for American sailors who had never seen anything like it before! Helena quickly developed into an important stopover spot on De Soto's final route between New Orleans and California during his explorations southwestward across America during what has come commonly called Hispanic Exploration Period such as San FranciscoMission Santa Barbara Mission SonomaMission Los Angeles MissionsAlmaden AdobeCachecadillac Ranch Adobe Walls Mission San Antonio de Padua Mission Californios today) During Mexican rule (1848-1853) local traders successfully lobbied for protection from Ulysses S Grant's army marching through their territory numerous times trying unsuccessfully each time to negotiate treaties surrendering all their lands including most importantly Helena which finally ceded its claim on October 30th 1850 after eight years following Ulysses S Grant's visit Thereafter citizens voted 5-0 pertainedy against annexation resulting in high school students boycotting classes effective December 17 th 1850virtually every adult male resident aged 25 or more voted yesagential license #27009Issued January 21st 1851 denoting incorporation date Present day

Helena is a town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It was founded by Helena Ladd and her husband, George H. Ladd, in 1864. The name of the town comes from Helena Peak in Huntsville County, Alabama. The first post office in Helena was established on December 12, 1865. It was called Deer Lodge and served as a stop on the Montgomery and Birmingham Railroad. The town acquired its present name on February 15, 1868 when it became part of the newly created Jefferson County. Helena experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century due to its location near the State Line Railway and other transportation arteries that facilitated commerce and trade betweenJefferson County and surrounding states. During World War I Bellefonte (later Fort Belvoir) replaced Helena as the primary garrison for military forces stationed in eastern Alabama . In 1919 Helena voters approved a proposition to change their name to Fort Belvoir in memory of General John Joffre who fought at Verdun
