Helena is also home to the Helena Air Force Base which provides access to air services for nearby communities. The community has been known for its annual 5K race which takes place on Saturday morning at downtown Helena's Main Street square. In recent years, more than $1 million has been raised by the community through races and events such as car shows, chicken fly tournaments, quilt exhibitions and pie sales/presentations/fundraisers
Helena was founded in 1822 by John C. Shelby, a surveyor and landowner. The town grew rapidly after the opening of the Alabama Railroad in 1828, and by 1830 Helena had a population of 350 residents. In 1835, Helena became the first town in Alabama to be chartered as an educational institution, with its first school built on what is now Fourth Street. By 1850, Helena had a population of 1,000 people and was one of the most important cotton towns in the state. In 1865, Helena was destroyed by fire, which killed over 100 people.
