Hartselle post office opened in 1876, and the first store was built on Main Street in 1878. In 1901, Wm Gentry founded Gentry's Coal and Coke Company which became one of the largest coal companies in Alabama andocal with over 100 stores throughout south central Alabama providing fuel for local streetcars and locomotives until its closure in 1978 due to environmental concerns brought about by lead mining operations around the town limits

In recent years Hartselle has experienced some decline due to economic factors such as declines in manufacturing jobs and population growth outside of town limits. However, efforts are currently being made to revitalize the downtown core with new development and programming that would help spur economic growth within the community once again
Hartselle was founded in 1816 by James Hartselle and his wife, Sarah. The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s, thanks to its natural resources and expanding commerce. In 1824, Hartselle became a Circuit Court seat for the Alabama Territory. By 1830, the town had reached its peak and boasted a population of around 1,200 people. However, all of Hartselle's prosperity came to an end after the Panic of 1837 caused a drop in business activity and economic decline. The town only recovered marginally in the 1840s before falling into obscurity once again throughout the remainder of the 19th century. In 1925, Hartselle was renamed for General John J. Pershing following his victory over Mexican forces at Pancho Villa's battle near San Juan Hill.
