The racial makeup of Hartselle at that time was 93% white (non-Hispanic), 5% black or African American (non-Caucasian), 2% Native American/Alaska Native (non-Hispanic), 1% Asian Pacific Islander (non-Hispanic), and 1% from other races (non-Hispanic). At that time there were 6 churches in town with over 2200 active members who attended services every day. According to the 2000 census result which included all towns in Cullman County with a population over 1000 then Hartselle's population increased to 8,824 making it one of the fastest growing towns in Alabama during that decade when adjusted for inflation only! The growth can be partially credited to both high school graduates moving into town after graduating from college or university as well as military families moving into town after their service ends or they are discharged from service; both groups brought more people and money totown than could have been imagined just 10 years earlier!
